Don’t you just love it when an author yanks your heart from your chest, shoves it in a blender, makes a smoothie out of it, then continues to make cake from said smoothie and then stuffs it back in your chest? Cause that’s what happened when I read Cait’s book, A Thousand Perfect Notes

(evil authors laughing as they break your soul into a thousand pieces)

HERE’S MY REVIEW (ALL SPOILERS SPILT) SO LEAVE RIGHT NOW IF YOU HAVEN’T READ IT.

OH YEAH DID I MENTION IT’S MY NEW FAVORITE BOOK.

I’M NOT EVEN BIASED.*

IT’S JUST GOOD.

Here’s the summary:

An emotionally charged story of music, abuse and, ultimately, hope.

Beck hates his life. He hates his violent mother. He hates his home. Most of all, he hates the piano that his mother forces him to play hour after hour, day after day. He will never play as she did before illness ended her career and left her bitter and broken. But Beck is too scared to stand up to his mother, and tell her his true passion, which is composing his own music – because the least suggestion of rebellion on his part ends in violence.

When Beck meets August, a girl full of life, energy and laughter, love begins to awaken within him and he glimpses a way to escape his painful existence. But dare he reach for it?

My summary/thoughts:

Beck is an adorbs smol bean who is forced by his abusive mother to PERFECT the piano so her legacy can live on. His little sister is totes adorbs and Beck will do anything to protect her. And August helps Beck find friends! And as soon as the ship sails Beck moves to Germany. (more evil authory) (STOP GIVING ME IDEAS I’M EVIL ENOUGH!!!) (or am I)

Main characters:

  • Beck
    • SUCH AN ADORABLE SMOL CHILD I FELL IN LOVE IN THE FIRST THREE PAGES! YAY ANOTHER FICTIONAL CHARACTER TO CRY ABOUT!
      • I reallllly wanna hear the song he composed for August. So bad.
  • Joey
    • An adorable little child she’s just adorbs hElp mE.
  • Mastero
    • Two GIFS:
    • Can you tell that I despise her
    • C’mon she hurt Beck he’s already protected in my soul.
      • He reminds me of one of my book characters, Rush.
  • August
    • People are saying ‘oh she’s such a manic pixie dream girl’ ‘that’s why this is trash’
    • you say that like it’s a bad thing
      • it’s such a cliche that people don’t use it anymore, therefore, it isn’t a cliche
    • THIS IS A LUNA LOVEGOOD BUT ALSO KINDA GINNY SITUATION
      • mix the two… BAM AUGUST FREY
        • I mean she’s named after the Norse god of healing
          • what do you expect? An evil and Shakespearean Fred/George? (I love you Loki)
    • I love her she has too many sharpies I relate
    • I mean the crazy types of food might be a bit much
      • do I care?
        • NO.

What I liked:

EVERYTHINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

What I disliked:

I think this is just Australian writing, but quotes use these: ‘____’

and not these: “___”

It was a bit confusing for me, but hey, I’m American.

Just not the crazily patriotic type.

(trust me, I’m not) (I want to have freedom, sure, just WHY AM I IN THE GRYFFINDOR COUNTRY?!)

  1. America = Gryffindor
    1. I mean PATRIOTISM
  2. Great Britain = Ravenclaw???
    1. I mean Oxford was founded there
  3. Canada = Hufflepuff
    1. assuming the stereotypes are true
  4. Australia = Hufflepuff as well
    1. I mean like a Newt Hufflepuff. FANTASTIC BEASTS CAN BE FOUND IN AUSTRALIA (they have almost-nifflers)
  5. China = Slytherin
    1. I mean, it rules the world. everything’s made there.

Alright Cait, I’m sorry that your review has been turned into a country sorting. #sorrynotsorry

Romance (if any) in a gif:

(I’m Jack and the water is my love and support being thrown in their faces)

Quotes:

“Chocolate is a substance worth dying for.” (I need this on my wall)

“I’m sure she’ll love those affectionately picked weeds.”

“He’s pretty sure glitter is an evil substance that is magnetically attracted to people who hate it most.”

“‘Um,’ Beck says intelligently.”

Favorite scene(s):

The hug at the end… just so sweetttttttttttttttttt the hug in the doorwayyyyyy and the kiss under the starssssss (funny thing I had just finished a kiss scene under the stars in my book like, last week) (great minds think ALIKE)

Rated on a scale from 1 to 10:

1000 perfect stars!!!

Now I have to go re-read this thing!

(tell me: have you read it)

(Did you notice all the ATPN puns and references? I read it twice (back to back) in an afternoon.)

*sends you all the cake of ever* 😭💛This is TOO KIND and you are the best!! I loved it all (especially sorting countries into Houses too??? Like so true there. I think Australia is probably really chill and laid back enough to be Huffles hahah.) And I’m so glad you fell in love with my smol children. They went through a LOT but are just Doing Their Best now. (I want to hear Beck’s song too!!) Thank you for reading!!
